Prospect Receives Monarch Award Grant

Prospect School received the good news that we were granted a hardcover set of the 2015 Monarch Award books from the LBSS Endowment Fund! There are twenty books for grade K-2 on the list of the Monarch Readers Choice Award. Students in K-2 at Prospect all are encouraged to read books from the list and vote for their favorite in March. In 2014, 196 students voted! Nineteen second grade students also read all twenty books on the 2013-2014 list! The 2014 Monarch Award winner was The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray.
In the congratulatory letter from the ISLMA/LBSS Endowment Fund Board, Chair Gail Janz shared that more than 200 libraries applied to receive one of the reader's choice award grants given for the 2014-2015 school year.

Summer Professional Learning

So far this summer I have enjoyed some time of relaxation but also learning! I am participating in becoming an official "Google Educator." I've joined a Professional Learning Community and have been learning through self-guided courses as well as with others in the Learning Community.
Additionally, I will be taking a week-long course in iPad in Education training.
Of course, summer for me involves lots of reading! In the first week off of school I took the time to read several "non-children's" books, which I don't usually do during the school year. I also have been reading and working on questions for next school year's Battle of the Books club, and considering books for One Book, One School.
I hope your summer is full of relaxing, learning, and reading as well!

Summer Reading

Just because Prospect MRC is closed does not mean children won't have access to amazing books and resources! Make sure to visit the Clarendon Hills Library this summer!

Monarch and Bluestem Award Winners

Gingerbread Man Loose in the School is the 2014 Monarch Award winner! Author Laura Murray will receive the award from the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) in October. The Prospect students also loved this book, which came in second place among the K-2 students. The first place winner at Elm was One Cool Friend. 

 Prospect second graders who read all 20 Monarch nominees got to attend a Monarch Award party! They were the first in the school to find out the winner. They also won raffle prizes and got popsicles.

When the Prospect 3-5 students cast their votes for the Bluestem Award this year, Wonder was the resounding winner. The third through fifth grade students around the state agreed. Nearly 8,000 students voted for it. Wonder is a moving tale of a 5th-grade boy with extreme facial abnormalities and his adjustment to going to school for the first time. Each chapter is told from the point of view of a different person. This is an excellent family read aloud. It's engaging for people of all ages and really encourages empathy.

Prospect 3rd-5th graders who read all 20 Bluestem Nominees came to a Bluestem party. They were the first to find out the winners, created READ posters with their picture, and won small prizes as well.
